Small test project for a further one im doing this year to test spells

So last time I shared I added a projectile named Energy Drink. At the time it was a quick spell I made to show off the functionality of my code to a teacher so it wasn't the best. It sped up the enemies which is just a net negative for the player. I also wanted to add passive effects or spells that effect the player so I decided to use this Energy Drink as an excuse to start this. So now when the energy drink is selected (name will probably be changed to be more  ✨ ***magical*** ✨) instead of shooting a projectile it gives the player 3 seconds of a slight speed increase.

Realized the last time I showed off this project was when everything was still capsules in a gray void so I thought it best to do an update. I got parabolic movement working and is now fully implemented on the last two weapon types and @Alec - President has done some work on the character and has made a Raccoon and some very nice animations. I have also added some more properties to the types of spells from size, speed, etc to add to their diversity. There is also a level switching system that can switch between the 6 levels that another one of our group members made but it is reall rough right now and will need some adjustments as the level switching is really just hiding and making visible levels around your current player leading to some falling out of bounds sometimes

For tonight I finally started to work on what I have been dreading. Parabolic projectiles. I set up the Godot resource to have a member called Projectile_Type when set to "linear" it acts as all spells so far but when set to "parabolic" it SHOULD do an arc. I have the switching working but right now parabolic projectiles instantly phase out of reality the second they are made so im not showing that off rn. Another thing I did is add a Ground_Destruction_Override member. When this is "yes" projectiles will no longer be deleted when hitting the ground and instead their movement will be stopped and they will sit as land mine type objects waiting for an enemy to step on it. This will allow for some throwables trap type things once I get their movement correct. Since I don't have any parabolic spells yet I just made the Fireball spell a land mine for this demonstration.

Some slight work done today. Refamilzared myself with this code since I havent worked on this in like a month. For actual work I plan to add a lot more possibilties to different spell types. So far all that can be changed is damage, color, and status effect (burn, shock, etc). This GIF shows the first I added, Speed. Before all spells moved at a relatively slow speed but now I have the ability to change this. This allows for some fast moving spells like sniper shots and maybe a slow moving high damage shot (high risk high reward type stuff). My next step is an actual hard part which is making a projectile linear (every spell so far that just goes straight) or parabolic (arc type shot for some lob typed spells). IDK exactly how yet im going to change this Godot Resource to be able to store which type, especially since i will also need stuff like max height and inital angle but thats tmr me issues

If I was home for the weekend I would have coded this instead of paper and pencil math but we work with what we got. Back to working on the item system I did a couple weeks ago and I want to try to make a new type of projectile. All of my projectiles have been spell typed weapons and have all been balls that you shoot in a straight line like a bullet. I want to make a lob type weapon like the path a throwable like a grenade would take. So as far as that goes I did a little paper math to design 2 formulas that I think would work for finding the parabolic motion. The X/Z direction is easy enough and just uses X and Z velocities to find the velocities of them together and then multiplies it by delta t to get the real time coordinates every physics process. The y direction is a bit worse but unlike the X/Z the y direction doesn't need to be figured out as that direction is the same in 2d or 3d. However you do need to subtract the gravity of the environment (something I will need to tinker with to make it feel good to use) to actually get the parabolic motion I want.

I actually added this close to like a week ago but forgot to make a post, made a new bullet type called Poison that does 10 damage and like burn then does damage over time but is quicker dmg with less dmg per tick

So todays changes don't seem to different at first but I did do a couple things, first I implemented what @Casey suggested and it worked perfectly, so the color changing of the material works now. However, where most of the work was done today was under the hood. @Dion - Vice President helped to make my code much more optimal by using a fancy tool from Godot called Resources (Pretty much Objects for OOP enjoyers). So now for my code (instead of needing to edit 3 billion lines when adding a new spell and deal with the 1000 errors that causes) you can just add a new child resource of the spell type, give it the info it needs like dmg and a possible status effect and add a keybind to the player and you have a new spell. To test this I made a new spell called Gun that does no status effect and just does 100 damage (lore accurate gun). While I think this is the end of this test project (might make some minor changes), I will be able to use this code when making the actual game this semester and should help when I start really brainstorming new spell types.

So for todays version I took the basic fireball projectile from last time (10dmg and 3 5dmg ticks) and added 2 new ones, an ice one (5 dmg and slows for 4 seconds) and a lightning one (20dmg and stuns them for 3). You switch between them with 1-3. What u dont see here is if u shoot a shot and then switch weapons to another the color of the new type overwrites the one currently in motion even if it keeps its current effects. So shooting a fire then ice will turn the fire bullet blue but it will still burn if it hits. That's an issue for tomorrow though.

For a school project I wanted to make a simple proof of concept for a projectile system and at the time I thought it would be easy since I have made 3D games before. However, what came next was a 3 hour process where I realized in those 3D games I have helped make I was never the one that dealt with projectiles and how to orientate them to the player with a first person camera. This is the fruits of my labor, a simple player movement system with WASD movement. jumping and shooting with a slow moving projectile that "kills" the enemy it hits (the projectile is slow moving because it is a fireball-esque projectile and not bullets)

Today I took the basic enemy from yesterday (early this morning technically) and made it so instead of dying on hit it instead damages the enemy. I also added a "burn" effect that does some further damage over time and of course when the health reaches 0 it dies. Hopefully tmr I can add some different types of projectiles since I have the code for damaging and applying a special effect already.
